The Arnason Award was created in 2020 to honour Dr. John Thor Arnason, his immeasurable contributions to student training and mentorship, and his commitment to respectful field research.

An annual award of up to $2500 will be presented annually to a graduate student or post-doctoral fellow who is a member of the Natural Health Products Research Society of Canada to help defray the costs of field research on a topic related to Indigenous Traditional Knowledge/Medicine and NHPs. Projects may include relationship-building and planning activities, primary research, and/or knowledge exchange and dissemination. Recipients of the Arnason Award will benefit from the development of cross-cultural knowledge; Indigenous ways of seeing; Indigenous ways of being; and respectful practices and will be featured on the NHPRS website.

Zonghua Ai Dalhousie University, Canada

Zonghua Ai is a Chinese phytochemist and language enthusiast undertaking her master's degree at Dalhousie University. She currently studies at Biology Professor Jonathan Ferrier Native Science and Medicine Lab and is conducting a Nishnaabeg ethnobotany meta-analyses to link community lead fieldwork and metabolomics studies.

Eligibility Applicants must be (or become) student members of the NHPRS, or members who have received their graduate degree within two years of the application deadline.

Application A PDF document (s) titled "Arnason award application-your last name" should be e-mailed to nhp.research.society@gmail.com by May 15th. The application should include (in a single PDF file):

  • Cover letter - Maximum 1 page and including email address for two references
  • Short proposal: Maximum 3 pages (excluding references); single spaced; 12 pt font
  • Proposed Budget - Maximum 1 page
  • CV or short resume.
  • Supporting documents if available: Letter of support from faculty advisor, Letter of Indigenous community engagement, Ethics approval or equivalent

Notification Applications will be judged by an ad-hoc committee of Society members and notified of their award status ahead of the Annual General meeting each year.

Reporting It is expected that the recipient will submit a manuscript to the Journal of Natural Health Product Research describing the research results, impact and relevance of the work.
